At The Mud House, we offer stand-alone throwing taster classes, as well as longer throwing courses designed to guide you from clay-confused to clay-confident in just 6 to 8 weeks. Our diverse range of pottery courses caters to all skill levels, from beginners to experienced ceramicists.

  • We categorize our pottery skill levels into three distinct levels to cater to your individual learning needs:

    • Level 0:

      • This is our most basic level, designed for complete beginners.

      • It includes all Drop-in classes and any beginner weekend intensives or one-off courses.

    • Level 1:

      • This level is the minimum requirement to join as a member at The Mud House.

      • It includes our 6-week or 8-week foundational courses, where you'll learn essential pottery skills and techniques.

    • Level 2:

      • Ideal for members looking to further develop their skills, this level focuses on improvement.

      • It includes 8-week improver classes for both hand building and wheel throwing, perfect for those looking to refine their techniques.

Small Class Sizes

We maintain small class sizes at a maximum of 8 people on a throwing course or 10 hand-building. To ensure everyone gets the guidance they need

  • 3-Week Express Throwing Course
    Dive into the art of pottery with our 3-week Express Throwing Course! This course focuses on the essentials of throwing, turning, and attaching handles to your pieces (16 yrs+ only).

    With a class limited to just 8 participants, you’ll receive plenty of guidance and support from our experienced staff.

    Included in the course are all the materials, tools, clay, and refreshments (including biscuits!).

    Course Highlights:

    • Studio set-up & safety procedures

    • Introduction to clay, tools, and equipment

    • Hands-on experience with throwing and turning techniques

    • During the final session, Learn to attach handles for a professional finish & choose from 3 types of glaze and use slips for decoration (we'll glaze your pieces for you!)

    Your completed pieces will be ready for collection within 3 weeks, depending on the weather!

    Refund Policy
    This course must be booked and paid in full. Due to limited space, we unfortunately cannot offer full refunds for cancellations. However, we understand that life happens! Our refund policy is as follows:

    • A 10% admin fee applies to all cancellations.

    • Cancel up to 3 weeks before the class for an 80% refund.

    • Cancel 2 weeks before the class for a 40% refund.

    • Cancellations after this period will not be refunded.

    • You may transfer your booking to another name but cannot transfer to a different class.

    • If the tutor is unable to run a particular session, a catch-up session will be arranged.

    • Should the course be cancelled by the tutor, a full refund will be provided.

    Absences
    Due to the structured nature of the course, rescheduling certain sessions may be difficult. While we’ll do our best to accommodate, please remember that we are a small business.

  • Daytime Course: £110 (3 sessions)

    Evening Course: £130 per person (3 sessions)

    We also offer a Pay It Forward scheme, which allows us to provide free spots on our courses for those who may struggle with the cost. If you're in a position to support this initiative, please consider making a donation through the TIP option at checkout.

  • So you watched Ghost? Then thought I’ve always wanted to try the potters wheel? But didn’t know where to start? Well this course is for you!

    This is perfect for beginners or those who want to brush up on the skills!

    The course runs over 6 weeks and includes learning pottery wheel basics - throwing, turning and finally glazing. (16yrs+only)

    This is limited to 8 students so lots of guidance :)

    This include all tuition, clay, tools, materials & refreshments inc biscuits 😉

    Additional firing costs at £16 per kilo of work (includes bisc and glaze firing costs)

    Course includes:

    • Studio set-up & safety

    • Learn about clay, tools & equipment

    • Learn basic throwing & turning

    • Practical fun on the pottery wheel

    • Learn basic Glazing and firing

    • A fun show and tell evening to look at each others work over a glass or two!

    You will be able to take home your masterpieces- which should be ready for collection within 3 weeks depending on the weather!

    Unfortunately, because of limited space we're unable to offer full refunds for cancellations, however we do understand that life gets in the way sometimes. If you wish to cancel you will be refunded as follow:

  • Join our 8-week Wheel Throwing Course, tailored for both beginners and those looking to improve their skills!

    This engaging program will immerse you in the art of pottery, covering key techniques and essential skills, including clay preparation, safety practices, and wheel throwing fundamentals.

    Level 1: You'll learn to create cylinders, bowls As well as techniques for trimming and glazing to finish your pieces beautifully.

    Level 2: You should have completed a throwing course at a beginner level either at TMH or similar. You will learn more about complex forms, throwing with intention and repetition, throwing larger pieces and attaching larger pieces.

    Course Highlights:

    • Studio Setup & Safety: Master the essential safety practices for navigating the pottery studio.

    • Materials & Equipment: Familiarize yourself with the clay, tools, and equipment you'll be using.

    • Basic Throwing Techniques: Gain confidence in creating unique forms on the wheel.

    • Glazing Fundamentals: Discover how to glaze your pieces to bring them to life.

    • Show and Tell Evening: Celebrate your progress by showcasing your creations while enjoying refreshments with fellow students!

    This course is ideal for anyone eager to explore wheel throwing in a supportive environment. It is suitable for participants aged 16 and older.

    With each class limited to just 8 students, you'll receive plenty of individual attention and guidance from our expert instructors. Your handcrafted pieces will be ready for collection within 3 weeks, depending on weather conditions.

    What’s Included:

    The course fee covers all tuition, clay, tools, materials, and refreshments (including biscuits!). Please note that additional firing costs are £10 per kilo of finished work, covering both bisque and glaze firing.

    Refund Policy:

    • This course must be booked and paid for in full.

    • Due to limited space, we cannot offer full refunds for cancellations, but we strive to accommodate changes whenever possible. Our cancellation policy is as follows:

      • Cancellations will incur a 10% administration fee.

      • Cancellations up to 3 weeks before the class will receive an 80% refund.

      • Cancellations 2 weeks before the class will receive a 40% refund.

      • Unfortunately, cancellations made after this period will not be refunded.

    If you cannot attend, you may transfer your booking to someone else, but no refunds will be given for missed classes, and transfers between different classes are not allowed. If the tutor is unable to conduct a specific session, a catch-up session will be arranged for the group. Should the entire course be canceled, a full refund will be issued.

  • Join our 8-week hand building and decoration course for an exciting journey into the world of pottery! Each session lasts for 2.5 hours and is limited to just 10 students, ensuring plenty of personalized guidance and support throughout your experience. (16yrs+only)

    Throughout the course, you'll explore a variety of techniques, including pinch pots, slab building, coil construction, and creating textures. You'll also learn about sgraffito, glazing, and using slip to enhance your pieces. Practical, hands-on activities will allow you to develop your skills in hand building pottery, all while fostering your creativity.

    The course includes:

    • Studio set-up & safety: Learn how to safely navigate the pottery studio.

    • Clay, tools, and equipment: Gain an understanding of the materials you’ll be working with.

  • (Level 0 Course) Weekend Intensive pottery wheel for absolute beginners. You will learn how to throw & turn your pottery masterpieces (16yrs+only)

    (Level 02 Course) Join our Weekend Intensive Pottery Wheel Course designed for improvers who have completed a Level 0 or Level 1 course.

    This is limited to 8 people within the class so lots of guidance for all students :)

    • Our team will look after and glaze your pots! you will have a choice of 3 kinds of glazes

    • Any pots that are kept will be charged at a rate of 10£ per kilo of work (weighed at pick up)
