Animal Sculpture Weekend Intensive with Jack Durling
When? 10am-4.30pm August 16th & 17th 2025
Price? £210
This is a two-day workshop designed for individuals who have knowledge in working with clay.
Using your reference materials, you will practice hand building techniques to create your own ceramic sculpture of an animal. You will learn coiling, slab building, and how to use armatures, techniques to bring your ideas to life in three dimensional form. You will also have the chance to experiment with different surface textures and form.
On the first day, you will engage in drawing exercises to help shape the composition of your sculpture and create a rough maquette. You will prepare clay slabs and start your sculptural piece or pieces. It is recommended to aim for one larger sculpture, no bigger than 40cm.
On the second day, you will continue refining your sculptures, focusing on texture and adding narrative and character. You will choose the pieces you want to be bisque fired after the workshop, which can be collected in 4 to 6 weeks. Alternatively you are able to transport your work away at your own convenience.
Please note you do not have to bring photo realistic drawings or are expected to be able to draw in this way. You need to consider shape and form. It is expected each student brings both photographic and two-dimensional reference materials to the workshop. Consider features, i.e eyes, feet, ears, limbs, side, head on profile if possible.
